How long can frozen foods be kept? |
There’s no simple answer because it depends on the product and storage conditions. In general, if your freezer is kept at the optimum temperature and items are properly wrapped, products can be stored satisfactorily for as long as a year. |
If that’s the case, what can I do to make sure my frozen foods will be at their best? |
Only buy clean, ice-free, undamaged packages. Choose frozen foods at the end of your shopping trip, and put your frozen foods away as soon as you get home. Make sure your home freezer maintains a temperature of 0°F. or colder. For an accurate reading, keep a refrigerator / freezer thermometer in your freezer and check it regularly. When returning unused portions of frozen foods to your freezer, carefully reclose resealable packages or pans with lids and crimped edges. If you do your own freezing, make certain your packaging is sufficient to prevent dehydration. Use freezer-wrapping materials such as plastic-coated freezer wrap, or plastic wrap, double thicknesses of plastic, plastic bags and rigid plastic containers with self-sealing lids. |
There’s been a power failure. Is there anything I can do to save my frozen foods? |
If a power failure occurs for a short time, the best thing to do is simply keep the freezer door closed. Then warm air is kept out, and the frozen foods can keep each other cold. |
Is it safe to refreeze food? |
We don’t recommend refreezing. Whenever in doubt about a food’s safety, especially if the odor or appearance of a thawed food seems "off", throw it out without tasting. |
